Clockwork will be making an appearance at the Los Angeles Harmony Sweepstakes a cappella competition – with special guest Trist Curless the amazing vocal bass from the super-group, m-pact! Trist will be taking the place of our entire rhythm section and killing it no doubt. The evening promises to be full of great singing and entertainment for the entire family.

Sunday, April 10, 2011 we’re at Barbara Morrison’s Performing Arts Center for Jazz on Sundays, 5-8 pm. We’ll be singing with her killer trio, We have Stuart Elster on piano, James Leary on bass and Lee Spath on drums. Come on out … we’re doing tunes from our current CD, selections from our Art of Vocalese show and some solo stuff from each of us that will include Juliet’s and Dave’s witty lyricism and maybe even a heartbreaker ballad from Angie … we’ll do our best to make you smile and weep.

Angie is going to be at Barbara’s place doing a vocal workshop on Saturday, April 9th from 1:00-3:00 pm, along with Barbara Morrison! Vocalists of all levels welcome!

Subjects will include theory, sight reading, phrasing, exercises, and how to keep your voice in shape. Barbara has entitled these Saturday workshops in April “How to survive in the Jazz World as a working Jazz Vocalist”. You must register in advance! Call 323-296-2272.

Join the members of Clockwork for a journey into the history and practice of vocalese. Singing those crazy instrumental lines and getting in all those lyrics takes some specialized skills. If you’re interested in learning more about performing in this Twisted genre, popularized by King Pleasure, Eddie Jefferson, Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, Kurt Elling, and many others, this will be right up your Charleston Alley.

Topics we will cover include:

Ideas for listening: a little history, and some hip instrumentalists and vocalists to inspire you
Performance practice: developing good phrasing, pronunciation and diction, agility and accuracy
Transcribing: technology, tools and short cuts
Writing your own: choosing appropriate “singable” solos, syllable emphasis, form and rhyme, copyright issues
Vocalese in a group: how to sing those complex melodic lines in a vocal ensemble setting
